The first Raging Granny group started in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, over the winter of 1986/87. They originally called themselves “NERT—Nuclear Emergency Response Team.” The members believed the presence of US Navy nuclear-powered ships in Victoria Harbour posed potential health and environmental risks to the city.
The Raging Grannies are a part of many branches of WILPF, including Des Moines.
Jan Hill, a peace-maker, social worker, therapist and part-time lounge singer wrote the words to so many of our songs and led our group while part of our branch for many years. Jan is now part of the Minneapolis WILPF Branch.
