SUMMARY:What Chicago taught Jane Addams about making peace\, WILPF US Event
DESCRIPTION:What Chicago taught Jane Addams about making peace\, WILPF US Event\nLessons Learned during America’s Long and Troubled Immigration Crisis \nNov 4\, 2023 02:00 PM – Central \nA little reported element of Jane Addams’ work in Chicago’s Hull House Settlement House is the experience she gained by putting herself in the middle of disparate immigrant communities which were often at odds with one another.  Through her experience during these early years at Hull House\, Addams was able to see past stereotypes and culture wars to create opportunities for appreciating and even valuing differences. Those experiences were absolutely the bedrock of her ongoing work for peace\, labor organizing\, and conflict resolution.  Her commitment to the Hull House motto of “WITH\, not FOR” (working in partnership and democratic equity with directly affected populations — not trying to tell them what was best for them) continued to define the democratic nature of Addam’s work. \nToday\, we need those lessons more than ever. \nPlease register to attend and share this event widely. \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMkf-Ghrz8pG9xSkLZMNrh1gE3Y7tbuR-u2 \nRima Lunin Schultz\, PhD Boston University\, is an animated and passionate speaker\, a highly regarded expert on Jane Addams\, and a national treasure.  Her research on Addams leans heavily on the immigration crisis surrounding those early years of Hull House\, and the way Addams was able to navigate the troubled times and long term historical conflicts the immigrants brought with them.  She was former Assistant Director of the Hull House Museum and serves on the Hull House Museum Advisory Board.  She is a scholar- in-residence at the Newberry Library in Chicago.  She has written and edited many books\, articles and papers about Jane Addams\, feminism and the Settlement House movement as practiced at Hull House. \n

SUMMARY:Online Forum: Existential Threats and Mass Movements
DESCRIPTION:Online Forum\nExistential Threats: \nWhat are the obstacles to a mass movement and how do we overcome them?\nMonday\, Oct 16\, 2023 – 7pm – 8:30 pm EDT / 6pm – 7:30 pm CDT \nREGISTER HERE\nThe Doomsday Clock is warning the world that a total nuclear catastrophe is more imminent than ever before. This year’s unprecedented levels of floods\, droughts\, and fires\, and accompanying loss of lives and livelihoods\, should also ring alarms. So\, where are the mass movements that are needed in response to these closely-intertwined twin existential threats—nuclear weapons and climate destruction? What are the psychological and social factors that prevent people from taking appropriate actions regarding those threats? What can we do to overcome the barriers to taking action on behalf of survival of the planet? Can we help create a mass movement? \nJoin us October 16\, 2023\, 7:00-8:30 PM Eastern (6:00-7:30 PM Central) for a lively panel discussion of these questions.  Our excellent moderator\, Claire Schaeffer-Duffy\, and three notable speakers (Joseph McCabe\, Joseph Hodgkin\, and Savina Martin) will start the discussion with their own perspectives on the challenges and the solutions\, followed by an opportunity for the audience to ask questions\, engage in small breakthrough groups led by Mass Peace Action members\, and then share their own recommendations for addressing the current barriers to sane action and moving forward.
